Plot:
Among the thoughtful, innovative, and distinctive figures of the New German Cinema, Rainer Werner Fassbinder was unique. He was a child who emerged from the post-Nazi era, combining his psychological wounds and existential anxiety with unparalleled creativity and perseverance. He fused Brecht with Hollywood melodrama, criticized both the left and right simultaneously, voiced his controversial insights, and left behind a prolific body of work in his short life. He aspired to be in cinema what Shakespeare was in theater, Marx in philosophy, and Freud in psychoanalysis: someone after whom nothing would ever be the same. Ali: Fear Eats the Soul tells the story of a German-Arab love in a society that seems to have not yet moved past fascism.
