Plot:
Straub-Huillet have been working together since 1963. All of their films are based on or adapted from other works: novels, operas, plays, and less conventional sources, such as political writings. Their sources range from the writings of Bertolt Brecht and Franz Kafka to Elio Vittorini and Marguerite Duras. Class Relations (1984) is an adaptation of Franz Kafka’s unfinished novel. Different from the Kafka understood in popular culture, the film paints a realistic picture of failure, conquest, and the feverish dream of reaching America from the perspective of a German.
