By exploring themes of alienation and identity crisis, and presenting a contemporary portrayal of Germany, “Young Törless” played a significant role in shaping the intellectual and artistic currents of its time, raising fundamental questions about morality, responsibility, and humanity. Schlöndorff was interested in adapting classic and contemporary literature, creating numerous works, including “The Tin Drum” (1979) based on Günter Grass’s novel, which won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival and the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
