Plot:
Stroszek is one of Werner Herzog’s lesser-seen films. It was written specifically for Bruno S., who two years prior had played the main character in Herzog’s more famous film, The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser. Through a closer look at this film and understanding the reasons for its appeal to the contemporary cinephile and today’s viewer, we attempt to delve into the New German Cinema. The film is also a good example of understanding the filmmaking methods of young filmmakers of this era (and other New Cinemas, including our own ‘Different Cinema’): the use of non-actors, filming in real locations, relatively amateur sound recording, and generally low-budget filmmaking; a kind of freedom in organizing the narrative and performances, and a rebellion against the established methods of classical studio cinema. All of these elements are present in Stroszek.
